All electricity consumers in Maine will automatically receive standard offer service unless they contract for competitive supply.

For Bangor Hydro Electric, Central Maine Power and Maine Public Service customers Standard Offer prices vary by rate class and are available on the MPUC website .

The MPUC bids the Standard Offer Rates on a regular basis. Standard Offer rates are set independently by rate class and distribution territory for a specific period of time (6 months to 3 years).

MPO keeps members informed on changes in S/O rates as well as providing analysis of available competitive pricing vs standard offer rates, both current and historical.

For more information on standard offer rates contact MPO.

The opt-out fee is a charge assessed when certain customers or aggregators – who have previously purchased electricity supply in the competitive market enter or default to standard offer service and remain there for less than 12 months before returning to competitive supply.  The fee is currently two times the highest month’s electricity supply bill for the most recent period that the customer has been on standard offer. The Opt-Out-Fee generally does not apply to Residential or small non-residential accounts or those with a demand of 50 kilowatts or less in a consumer owned or municipal distribution utility territory with a single standard offer class. Consumers can contract for competitive supply during the 1-month period, but competitive supply service cannot start again until after the required 12 months of standard offer service has passed. So contract start dates must be at least 12 months from the date an account returned to standard offer supply. For more information see the Opt Out Fact Sheet on the MPUC website.
